How do you defy destiny?

Helen Hamilton has spent her entire sixteen years trying to hide how different she is—no easy task on an island as small and sheltered as Nantucket. And it's getting harder. Nightmares of a desperate desert journey have Helen waking parched, only to find her sheets damaged by dirt and dust. At school she's haunted by hallucinations of three women weeping tears of blood . . . and when Helen first crosses paths with Lucas Delos, she has no way of knowing they're destined to play the leading roles in a tragedy the Fates insist on repeating throughout history.

As Helen unlocks the secrets of her ancestry, she realizes that some myths are more than just legend. But even demigod powers might not be enough to defy the forces that are both drawing her and Lucas together—and trying to tear them apart.

PURCHASE THE BOOK HERE:

When I went to MIBF couple of months ago, I actually didn't bring any list of titles to buy. Scoured the event a bit and when I found Fullybooked's booth, Starcrossed was one of the titles on display for HarperTeen and together with Hereafter and Sweet Evil, I bagged it. I am so happy I did.

When Helen Hamilton starts to get nightmares and wakes up dirty and feeling exhausted, the Delos family moves in and settles in Nantucket. She's always tried her best to ignore how different she is but when she sees Lucas Delos the first time, everything weird about her starts to arise. And what startles her is how she loathes him so much that she wants to kill him herself.

The joy of knowing that Nantucket is the chosen location is unexplainable. It gives a very soothing vibe and it is very far from what I always get like New York. It is also the perfect place for a greek mythology plot to transpire and I couldn't get any happier realizing that two of my favorite things - setting and plot type - come in one story.

It fascinates me how I fell in love with Lucas. His humor, compassion, pride and beauty fit perfectly without overdoing one thing from the other. His character builds up from a mysterious new comer to an amazing male protagonist I didn't expect him to become. I giggled all the time because of how romantically awesome he is, it isn't something too cheesy because he expresses his feelings just right. I love him because he didn't take advantage of Helen's feelings but let the situation take charge. Lucas is definitely a perfect character, mischievous and lovely. The only thing that I didn't agree on is how he could easily decide to run away after fighting for so long along side his family. Though his loving and supportive family would understand, I wish he could have just stuck with his initial plan. Helen on the other hand, possesses a very gentle heart that even though she has so much on her plate, she manages to think of others. Tremendous powers now she carries, she chooses to train and protect the ones she loves and not use it to satisfy whatever she wants unlike Daphne, which is a little bit predictable but she filled the last part of the story with so much action and pain that left a hole in my chest.

The story was fantastically written. It didn't focus on just one point of view but Angelini tried to do it on multiple approach. I thought at first that it would make the story confusing but she took be by surprise! Not only did it make the story so much interesting, but it consistently unfold the story in a way that you would get the entirety of the picture. And that is something Starcrossed perfected!

Josephine Angelini's debut novel is a mix of different worlds on different levels. It is an enticing approach to make mythology interesting and refreshing. It wouldn't let you down!

"I don’t care how hard being together is, nothing is worse than being apart."
