There's just this joy in buying books and I am absolutely addicted to it. So yeah, a little ashamed but absolutely happy.

REVIEW: 10 THINGS I CAN SEE FROM HERE BY CARRIE MAC.

Title: 10 Things I Can See from Here
Author: Carrie Mac
Series: Standalone
Edition: Paperback
Publication: February 28th 2017 by Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers
Source: ARC provided by the publisher
Pages: 320
Genre: Young Adult, Romance, LGBTQIA+, Contemporary, Mental Illness

Synopsis:
Perfect for fans of Finding Audrey and Everything, Everything, this is the poignant and uplifting story of Maeve, who is dealing with anxiety while falling in love with a girl who is not afraid of anything.

Think positive.
Don’t worry; be happy.
Keep calm and carry on.

Maeve has heard it all before. She’s been struggling with severe anxiety for a long time, and as much as she wishes it was something she could just talk herself out of, it’s not. She constantly imagines the worst, composes obituaries in her head, and is always ready for things to fall apart. To add to her troubles, her mom—the only one who really gets what Maeve goes through—is leaving for six months, so Maeve will be sent to live with her dad in Vancouver.

Vancouver brings a slew of new worries, but Maeve finds brief moments of calm (as well as even more worries) with Salix, a local girl who doesn’t seem to worry about anything. Between her dad’s wavering sobriety, her very pregnant stepmom insisting on a home birth, and her bumbling courtship with Salix, this summer brings more catastrophes than even Maeve could have foreseen. Will she be able to navigate through all the chaos to be there for the people she loves?

!!! TRIGGER WARNING: ANXIETY/PANIC ATTACKS !!!
If you suspect you have anxiety or if you are diagnosed and can be triggered right away, I suggest you lielow with this book. It triggers page by page. I had so many attacks by reading this book but I survived (yay!) and loved it at the same time (double yay!). It also talks about different kind of abuse. I just don't want readers to dive into this one without being warned.

I wanna copy Kelly's note-format from the ARC. Here goes my review:

1) For those of us who suffer from anxiety/panic attacks no matter how mild or wild, this book is screaming TRIGGER. So if you think it would be hard for you, I don't recommend it. But if you wanted to get past the fear of being triggered, go for it.

2) The family dynamics in this book is just pure reality. I adore the twins, Claire most especially but I learned to appreciate Billy at the end. Billy is all fucked-up dad but he's trying his best to come back clean. And Claire is just so sweet and kind for a step-mom/mom and that's all wonderful and amazing.

3) I am always amazed by art. In this book, different kinds of art played such fantastic roles in the character's lives which put such a kick to it. We have great musicians and artists who portrayed how such talents can be an outlet or expression.

4) Bioluminescence is one thing I've only seen on Facebook. I've always dreamed of getting to experience and see it one day and I am truly happy that this breathtaking mystery is a part of someone's unforgettable experience.

5) This book is allows readers to see first hand how anxiety destroys lives. How it can control every single aspect in every day life, how it brings so much horror to the person with anxiety, how it also affects the people around and it could lead to unhealthy relationships. I can totally understand why people would find the MC annoying at times because of the repetitive way of thinking gruesome thoughts, but the interpretation of anxiety in this book was just so fucking raw there's no other way to interpret it.

6) I am just so tired of having a man save a woman from herself all the time. I may sound sexist but it's just so fucking freeing to see a woman be there for another woman.

7) Maeve and Salix's relationship is the best ever!!! Awkward, confusing, sexy, romantic and genuine! There were definitely off moments (like the one at the park) but they tried to make it work and I can't help but be happy for them. Oh, my heart!

8) Sexual assault is sexual assault. This book didn't romanticize it but showed the reality of it. It also touches drug abuse and domestic/verbal/mental/emotional abuse. Could be triggering but such important aspect of the book that shouldn't be dismissed. It is sad that these things are still happening in real life and I wish people would just stop harrassing one another. It truly breaks my heart.

9) Owen just filled my heart with warmth and joy!

10) Gnomeville fantasy story should be a separate MG book! It sounds captivating!

10 Things I Can See From Here is so emotionally invested that you really have to be ready before giving it a go. This novel puts you in a mood that is both electrifying and heart-filling!

Thank you Penguin Random House for the ARC!

I am happy to have finally found another book that rendered me speechless. Not only because of its moving prose but more importantly, because of its strong impact. KNIFE STRAIGHT TO THE HEART. History is All You Left Me is one of the important books everyone needs to read and I highly recommend this bittersweet novel to all. Adam's writing is a gift to literature, it speaks to you, it haunts you, it warms you.

Griffin, Theo and Wade make a perfect trio. Griffin's OCD didn't stop Theo from loving his bestfriend back. Instead, Theo adjusts and sees it as Griffin's special attribute. They are a happy couple that at times, they make Wade feel as the third wheel. When Theo is about to leave for college, Griffin breaks up with him thinking they would not workout, that eventually, Theo will break up with him. Theo met this beautiful guy, Jackson and they fell in love. Leaving Griffin in pain and Wade lost. Not knowing, they would lose Theo forever. The last person Griffin would go to is Jackson but their grief and love for Theo bound them. Wade was left alone dealing with his loss but love made all of them have hope at new beginnings.

I dove in to this book unprepared because this is my first Silvera book. HIAYLM is narrated by Griffin as if he's talking to Theo directly. This felt like such a personal touch to it and absolutely adored how Griffin functions. Actually, I love all the characters. Griffin, Theo, Wade and even Jackson. They have different personalities but they all have this pure love in their hearts that make them shine. These boys are written in such a way that they reflect your own emotions and I just couldn't help but drown in feels.

History is All You Left Me is perfect in unperfect ways. It welcomes, it gives, it educates.

Thank you, Penguin Random House for the review copy!

"People are complicated puzzles, always trying to piece together a complete picture, but sometimes we get it wrong and sometimes we’re left unfinished. Sometimes that’s for the best. Some pieces can’t be forced into a puzzle, or at least they shouldn’t be, because they won’t make sense."
"History is nothing. It can be recycled or thrown away completely. It isn’t this sacred treasure chest I mistook it to be. We were something, but history isn’t enough to keep something alive forever."

REVIEW: A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC BY VE SCHAWB.

Title: A Darker Shade of Magic
Author: V.E. Schwab
Series: Shades of Magic #1
Edition: Hardbound
Publication: February 24th 2015 by Tor Books
Source: Bought from Fullybooked
Pages: 400
Genre: Fantasy

Synopsis:
Kell is one of the last travelers--magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes connected by one magical city.

There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, and with one mad King--George III. Red London, where life and magic are revered--and where Kell was raised alongside Rhy Maresh, the roguish heir to a flourishing empire. White London--a place where people fight to control magic and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London. But no one speaks of that now.

Officially, Kell is the Red traveler, ambassador of the Maresh empire, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see. It's a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.

Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She robs him, saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.

Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they'll first need to stay alive.

*pinches bridge of nose*
*exhales*

Why? Why did this book have to dra-a-aaag? I understand, I do, why it had to be slow. To build up the world, the magic, the backdrop.. But it would have been absolutely perfect if it didn't dra-a-aaag. Man, I just got no time. (Obviously *my* issue, not the book's LOL)

Also, the last few parts just got so predictable and easy? I was expecting a bit more struggle but I felt like the fight scenes were staged. It said in the beginning that the antagonists weren't easily defeated but what happened at the end? Don't tell me the protags got lucky? No, no no noooooo. I didn't shell out huge money for this book just to be let down.

But I did shell out huge amount of money for a book that I believe is astoundingly expensive but worth it. (Just borrow it from the library before buying just in case or go for the paperback) ADSOM popped my Schwab v-card and I can say I am impressed. The parallel worlds blew me away, the characters were all given justice and the story was amazing (some parts felt LOTR-ish and HP-ish). I enjoyed walking the different Londons with Kell, meeting Lila the badass (my absolute fave female character after Celaena), Rhy et all and unwrapping mysteries of ADSOM.

Trusting authors to be your ally in this life is a huge mistake because they prey on you. They bait you. And you easily fall for them and made you want to be their bffs then once you start falling for their characters, they brutally kill them off. I had a bunch of what-the-fuck moments in this book, not only because the characters I was rooting for didn't survive. There's also an elimination pattern. It can be easily spotted. It was impressive in the beginning how you would vie yourself that the character would stay alive but then it starts to feel flat by end because they were all the same.

I wish there were more magic spells as opposed to the very limited AS *word*. It wasn't convincing enough for me but they have this very alluring sound when the Kell casts them. (Obviously *my* issue again, not the book's LOL) And my favorites are As Travars and As Hasari.

This review may sound negative which is the tone I am trying to avoid so I'm sorry, I could find the right words. I rated this book 4 stars because a) cover b) there are so many possibilities in this vast world c) IT IS REALLY AMAZING d) Parrish and Barron e) Lila. She's one of the best female lead characters I've ever come acrossed. She's her own hero, independent, achiever, wanderlust, tough, DAMN BOYISH SHE DIDN'T NEED A GOWN TO BE PRETTY FUCK THEM ALL, she's so goddamn witty and ASPIRING PIRATE?! YES TO ALL. Lila is a dream-come-true character and I've been searching for her my whole life. How to be you, Lila?

A Darker Shade of Magic is one hell of an expensive book. It may have fallen short in some aspects but compensated so much more in others! This book is not hard to love at all!

"Hesitation is the death of advantage."
"You have a house if not a home," she spat. "You have people who care for you if not about you. You may not have everything you want, but I'd wager you have everything you could ever need, and you have the audacity to claim it all forfeit because it is not love."
"I--"
"Love doesn't keep us from freezing to death, Kell," she continued, "or starving, or being knifed for the coins in our pocket. Love doesn't buy us anything, so be glad for what you have and who you have because you may want for things but you need nothing."
"Battles may be fought from the outside in, but wars are won from the inside out."

PURCHASE THE BOOK HERE:

Blood of Wonderland is one of my most anticipated releases this year and it is also my second one for 2017. I love Queen of Hearts and any other Alice in Wonderland retelling. Splintered set the bar quite high but this series didn't disappoint.

Blood of Wonderland took of right where Queen of Wonderland finishes. Dinah is running for her life after she was setup by her father and she ends up in a magical forest. Then she gets helped by a Spade. She's training and meets up with this character who reveals such mind-blowing secrets I really could wrap anything into.

Dinah is not the type of character you usually see in books. I loved that fact that she's described as plain because plain is beautiful. It is seldom that I encounter main characters that are not described as you know, magazine models. And her development is amazing to watch. She developed on her own which proves we don't need a man to be the best versions of ourselves.

Oakes owned this retelling by twisting the characters using her voice and it is really a fascinating thing to be able to point out the author's tone in all this. The consistency of the story is fluid and the plot twist is just insane! And the romance? AFTER I READ IT, I HEARD MY HEART SHATTER ON THE FLOOR. Like, I was kind of expecting it but damn, man! The ache was real!

Blood of Wonderland is a sequel time worthy. It's so gritty it makes Alice retellings even more fantastic!

Thank you JB for the ARC!

REVIEW: POISON'S KISS BY BREEANA SHIELDS.

Where do I start with Poison's Kiss? This took me by surprise. I didn't know what I'm getting myself into but I loved every single element in this novel.

Marinda is trained to be an assassin. Her body is full of snake's venom that she can kill by just a kiss. When the Raja ordered her to kill a very important person, she didn't do it for she knows this person, this person helped her sick younger brother Mani. She had brief encounters with this person and she finds him kind. Marinda is unable to kiss someone she's starting to like. Ironic as it is, Deven is such a good person Marinda don't understand what he did wrong to deserve death by a visha kanya. This is where she finds out what makes her brother so ill. This is also when she learns the truth behind the group she serves.

Here's my bulleted thoughts on this amazing story:

  • Marinda and Mani
  • I adored how vulnerable Marinda from the beginning. Vulnerable in a way that she's doubting her beliefs. She's obviously raised to become an assassin but she's at war between what she's trained to fight for and what feels right to her. I loved that she allowed herself to be subjected by emotions at the right circumstances. Her character's growth is gradual and nothing felt forced. The relationship of Marinda and Mani is also one aspect of the book that I loved so much. The bond is so realitically emotional. They give each other strength and they ground each other. Like, I wouldn't know what I' do if something bad happens to my brother so I can totally connect to Marinda. I'd do whatever it takes just to give my brother a comfortable like. And Mani is a kid you can easily love.
  • Deven
  • Deven is book boyfriend worthy. He isn't afraid to express how he truly feels. I liked that he gets angry (unlike other characters I've read in other books). He can easily forgive but you have to be worth it. The way he also cared for Marinda and Mani is something that truly melts the heart. His character is so uplifting and positive that you won't regret rooting for the guy.
  • Iyla
  • She's my second favorite character after Lila from ADSOM because her strength and bravery are admirable. After all that she's gone through and the suffering she had to endure, she really has the heart of a true warrior. Girl power to the mightiest level.
  • Visha Kanya
  • This is such a rich Indian Folklore I can't get enough of! Poison maiden? IM IN. India is one of the many countries with such rich culture. Posion's Kiss is just the tip of the iceberg and I want more. More. More.
  • Snakes
  • Snakes aren't my favorite thing in the world and I don't think I will ever like them. This is me to snakes like how other people are to spiders. I cannot. I cringe whenever I look at the cover. But there's always an exception to the rule. This time, it's Poison's Kiss. It is so good that I forget there's actually a snake at the front cover.
  • Author's voice
I can sense the kindness of the author from the voices she used in this novel. That made me love it even more.
  • Plot
All I can say is it's your typical good versus bad (Naga versus Garuda) plot but with the *twisted* twist! The manipulation is UGH-MAZING! It's just mind-blowing!
  • Unputdownable
I don't know about you guys but I literally cannot put this book down! The story is just so damn good you get sucked right in! With a pacing as perfect as this, you can't blame me if I demand for the sequel right away.

Also, I am linking Mishma's review of Poison's Kiss! Her review has an in depth views in the mythologies mentioned in the book!

Breenana Shield's debut novel is an outstanding piece I cannot recommend enough! It is unbelievably scary and dark but mystical and unique. Poison's Kiss is easily one of my favorite reads of 2017!

Thank you so so much, Penguin Random House for the ARC!

WAITING ON WEDNESDAY: DEFY THE STARS BY CLAUDIA GRAY.

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill of Breaking the Spine that highlights our much anticipated books.

Expected Publication Date: April 4th 2017
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Add to Goodreads
Noemi Vidal is a teen soldier from the planet Genesis, once a colony of Earth that's now at war for its independence. The humans of Genesis have fought Earth's robotic "mech" armies for decades with no end in sight.

After a surprise attack, Noemi finds herself stranded in space on an abandoned ship where she meets Abel, the most sophisticated mech prototype ever made. One who should be her enemy. But Abel's programming forces him to obey Noemi as his commander, which means he has to help her save Genesis--even though her plan to win the war will kill him.

Together they embark on a daring voyage through the galaxy. Before long, Noemi begins to realize Abel may be more than a machine, and, for his part, Abel's devotion to Noemi is no longer just a matter of programming.

I haven't read any Claudia Gray books yet (oops) and when I heard that this is a sci-fi read (I rarely read synopsis), I knew I had to get to this one soon! It's giving me Illuminae slash Wall-E feels! Aaaaah, this is going to be an epic one, I can feel it. Plus, some of my fave bloggers are raving about this so I am in good hands! April can't get here fast enough!

What title/s did you pick this week?

PURCHASE THE BOOK HERE:

Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda has been on my radar for quite a while now. I didn't get to it right away because the hype is overwhelming, plus, I didn't have a copy yet. It just so happen that I spotted a copy on sale last year when I visited Cebu and I knew it would be the best memorabilia I could take home. I didn't read it until late December. Simon is the first book I read this year and it couldn't have been more perfect.

Thank you, Becky, for writing Simon vs. This is one of those moving, influential and important books we all need to read (I will definitely re-read!). I loved every single part of this book because it's so raw that it brings out all sorts of emotions. I loved loved loved Simon's parents, Simon, Martin (I learned to love this character at the end), and BLUE. OMG I NEVER GUESSED WHO HE WAS IT BUT I LOVED HIM EVEN FROM THE START. FROM HIS EMAILS UP UNTIL THE END. IT WAS FREAKING MAGICAL YOU GUYS. AAAAAAH I LOVE YOU, BLUE!

I can't find the right words to express how happy I am with Simon vs. I mean, this is the book I will forever push down everyone's way because Becky wrote THE perfect book!

"White shouldn't be the default any more than straight should be the default. There shouldn't even be a default."
"He talked about the ocean between people. And how the whole point of everything is to find a shore worth swimming to."
"Being secure in you masculinity isn't the same as being straight."
