Synopsis:
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves.. or it might destroy her.

I've been seeing good reviews about Divergent and since, I couldn't stop myself from getting my own copy. Luckily last month, I was able to find and get that pocketbook edition I've been searching for. I just felt like reading it but unfortunately, work has been consistently eating my time.
This weekend, when I had my time off from the world, I was able to focus on it. And here's what I thought about it.
Faction. Abnegation. Dauntless. Erudite. Amity. Candor. WTH? On its first few chapters, I started feeling disappointed because I couldn't understand the plot itself like where the story is going, what the characters are really going to portray and how was it called a dystopian book. I couldn't grasp the gist, you know. The story kept on going and going without at least giving a bit of history. I didn't stop reading because I still hoped for a miracle. For me, the story only started when Caleb and Beatrice chose different factions (like district in The Hunger Games). It is also a bloody one. This is a dystopian book so you would see similarities with The Hunger Games, only in this story, you would fight for your people and for what you really are, not just food for yourself. I wouldn't go through the story that much because I don't want to spoil those who haven't read the book yet. To those of you who haven't, I suggest you read the last part first where Veronica explains everything about the factions and I guarantee that you would love the story to bits!
Honestly, I can't wait to get Insurgent. I am expecting more of that adrenaline-boosting scenes and of course, the continuation of Four and Tris' love story.
Oh BTW, I think I was born for DAUNTLESS!! Go Tris!
"We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another."
"Becoming fearless isn't the point. That's impossible. It's learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it."
