JULY 2013 RECAP + BOOK OF THE MONTH.

I've read quite a handful of books this month that made me happy because its been two consecutive months now that I am on my reading bonanza! I still hope to continue it and praying so hard that reading slump won't visit me anytime soon! I've also LOVED some of the titles I finished however, I think I've marked 3 books below 3 stars. I would also want to share the book that I truly loved and can blurb about twenty four by seven here. This title not only made me fall in love with it but the impact it has on me is tremendously strong that I had book hangover for days (and of course, my personal thoughts on the novel is considered). Here I you go!

It was tough choosing which title to pick for the month's BOTM because as you all could see, I've read awesome and fantastic books this month like THE FALSE PRINCE (OMG I can't even tell you how good this is) and OF POSEIDON (and another OMG because OMG! Really? This is so so good!) (I didn't count Twilight because it would be totally biased since I've re-read it). I wanted to choose them all but there's just one title that ruled them all. Nothing compares to it. As in nothing because it completely melted my bones. Obviously, it is

I simply cannot find the words to review this or even gush about it! Because of this fantastic book, I made a new special verdict metric on the blog because it deserves so much more!

Luckily, they have it available so I went and picked it up WHEN I saw Sapphire Blue!!!! O.M.G!! It was even prettier in person and there were only two copies left! Ugh! I was so lucky!! Then I was actually contemplating if I also should buy Lola and the Boy Next Door and September Girls but as you all know, I am trying so hard to keep up with my monthly book budget so I had to reserved till next pay day! You know, I was seriously mezmerized by Sapphire Blue and I keep petting its cover! So so pretty!

Twilight is a phenomenon!

I've been re-reading my PDF copy of Twilight since 2008 so I've read it over I think 15x times already over the years. I've only read my paperback copy twice. Since I am blogging about books now, I thought it would be best to write up my long overdue review for it. I know, it will be forever biased on my side because Twilight is the culprit my I am into books now and as far as I could tell, I have never been ashamed that I loved it to bit nor I am such a huge fan.

Bella's mom remarried and she cannot afford to move around a lot. She decided to move in with her father Charlie in Forks, Washington. She will definitely miss sunny Arizona and she doesn't know how she will cope with rainy Forks. Good thing her childhood friend Jacob still remembers her. However, when she sees the Cullens at school, she is immediately curious about this family and their inhuman beauty. Especially Edward Cullen. The dazzling Edward Cullen.

Well, I am a thousand percent in love with this novel. I will never be ashamed (I know a lot of people hated this) and will always be a huge fan of Meyer and the Saga. If I remember correctly, the thing that made me delve into this when I first read it years back was the premise. It was my first vampire novel (sorry Vampire Academy, I will have to get my grabby hands on you soon) and it was such a light read completed with swoony romance. I remember wishing I was Bella Swan over and over so I could be turned a vampire. It ignited my dormant love for reading and I promised myself that I will never stop anymore. The world building was so simple yet full of mysteries and action. Who wouldn't fall in love with Forks and the Reservation? It was an example that no matter where you are in the world, simple and content life can be attained. I loved how vivid Meyer explained the high school, Swan's residence, the Tribe, the Cullens.. everything was so easy to picture out and somewhere at some point, I CAN TOTALLY RELATE TO IT. Well, not the vampire part but the simplicity of the livelihood they have. The fun fact that one's destiny can be changed by merely deciding to move with your dad. I loved the twists (THE FIGHT SCENE WITH JAMES OMG), the retelling of Vampire slash Werewolves myth, the oh so sweet romance and the history compiled all together into this one awesome novel. Most specifically, I totally dig how easy it was to read from the POVs..

The characters are all fantastic. Jacob for example. He's very straight to the point and a little sarcastic which made his character *at first* hilarious! Then we have the Cullens. Aren't they just perfect? I loved them all! Emmett was the hunk Vampire with an easy attitude, Rosalie was the prettiest yet she's got hang ups, Jasper was the newest member so he was a little harder to control yet I loved his gift, Alice who is my favorite, she's very friendly, sweet and loving! Though she goes a little overboard with fashion, her character gave so much life to the story and without her and her gift, I actually can't picture out what will happen next. Esme's also a very loving foster mother and I hope all mothers would be as selfless as her and I think Carlisle was the perfect match for her. Edward on the other hand, used to be my ONLY fictional boyfriend because of his good intentions and mesmerizing smirk! My brain is always, I mean ALWAYS associating Volvo to Edward and believe when I say that whenever I stumble upon one, I can hear myself murmur, "Edward?". He's not only good looking but intelligent and good-hearted. And even though Bella can be sometimes slow and irrational, I loved her nonetheless.

Twilight resurrected this long forgotten love for reading! It is mysterious, fun, romantic and simple novel that completely captured my heart right at its first chapter! I haven't tired yet of re-reading this novel now and I would forever be indebted to this for making me this kind of reader I am today: voracious!

Hopeless is SO incredible!

I have been seeing so much good news about Hopeless on Twitter. As in a lot of good things. I decided that since I am still a baby when it comes to the New Adult genre, I would definitely try this one out. OMG guys. IT WAS THE BEST DECISION I MADE EVER.

Sky is going to college in a year but she doesn't want to spend her senior year home schooled. When her mother lets her enrol into a public school, she instantly gets a label because of her reputation of making out with lots of guys. She's very indifferent about it though and even wishes for mean girls to be at least creative with their insults. When she goes to a grocery store after school, she sees Holder and he weirdly follows her to her car. For the first time, Sky felt something cripples in her body and according to her best friend, it's lust. She doesn't have any idea that their world is about to collide and secrets buried for thirteen years will be finally exposed.

The thing with Hopeless, it took my whole existence into a totally different dimension. It have given me the ultimate shock ever in my life coming from a book! I have tweeted about this and it honestly ruined me, ruined my expectations, ruined my love for reading. Whatever I have set up as my personal standards for loving a book, it completely ruined it! Because of Hopeless, I had to make and add a new verdict metric! Seriously, five stars wouldn't do it justice! It may have been unfair with my previous reviews which I know deserve this kind of rating but without Hopeless, this wouldn't even be possible. I LOVE THIS NOVEL TOO MUCH IT HURTS. I mean, the twists were all out-of-this-world-heart-numbing-painful and I really really could feel the emotions pouring out of the pages. It was sort of magical for me. The experience was so overwhelming I wanted to read it again. I thought at first it was just you know, a typical NA Contemporary but it was everything I have never expected it to be. I didn't really see that coming. I love the entirety of the plot. Hoover's take on suicide and sexual abuse was so bold that you want to help raise awareness and it wasn't just about sympathizing the victims, in this book, I somehow felt like I was the victim. It let me see directly through the eyes of each characters so vivid, so real. And probably the major thing that seriously captured my soul was how Colleen turned "making love" into a higher level. She was able to give it so much meaning and it wasn't even just merely sex but something full of soul and deeper meaning. It was just amazing. There weren't any dull moments in it.

The love I have for the characters weighed so heavy my heart can barely sustain it. We all have a very good set of characters. And let me try and enumerate them again.
* Six - phenomenal bestest best friend in the whole wide world that I loved to bits because of her witty attitude, thoughtfulness and respect for her friend.
* Breckin - second bestest best friend in the whole wide world that I would really really like to have in my life! I love all my gay friends and they bring so much color to everything they do and everyone they meet. They are definitely happy people. They make me so much happy.
* Karen - my kind of mother! She's awesomely selfless and her character's very loving, understanding and protective in such a way that she's willing to lose herself in order to save lives from the brink of disaster. I want to give her character a hug and a round of applause.
* John - if I only liked swearing, I would've swore and called this character names he so deserves. I don't and will never understand how a person can do such horrible things. I want to puke and an apology will not compensate whatever damage he had done. Ever.
* Sky - she's the toughest, smartest, weirdest, funniest female protagonist I have so far encountered. She was so emotionally stable and mentally tough! I adore her for being so modest despite the secrets laid on the table for her. I thought she would break down at some point but even though she's on the verge of being so, she managed to fight back and tried thinking clearly. She survived this tragic event in her life not only because she wasn't resilient but also because of how her support group protected her to her best interest. She was hurting but she chose to accept the bitter reality and embrace her present for a clean slate. I wouldn't have handled that well at any point.
* HOLDER. THE DEAN HOLDER. - the most whipped boyfriend in the whole wide world absolutely turned my legs to noodles. Like overcooked noodles. I almost put post-its on every page where he's talking because he's so quotable! I LIVE HOLDER SO MUCH. I love how he reacts to things annoyingly, the way he jokes and remember things about Sky, the way he thinks and feels is amazing because he knows exactly how to make someone feel better without being hypocrite. They fact that he thinks first before he delivers his thoughts is beyond a hundred handsome points! DAMN, THIS GUYS IS NOT ONLY HOT BUT TRIPLE HOT! He's got the heart to love beyond what love means! HE'S IMPERFECTLY PERFECT!

I will not make my introduction to this review longer because I've just reviewed book one the other say. And I will not make this review longer either.

So in this novel, Cammie and her friends just came back from a semester break and they were shocked to see that an entire wing of the school has been locked. Cammie's mother, the headmistress of the academy, was talking to Professor Solomon and Cammie overheard them. They wouldn't want her to know about something. Being the spy the she is, she tried to find out what was that all about and she found out about Blackthorne. During a practice mission, she met Zach. A handsome guy from the Blackthorne Institute.

As promised, this wouldn't be long and I don't think I would still read the third book. I was disappointed with this sequel. Why you ask. I just took down two major flops I found on the novel:
a.) How did Macey become a boy expert again? How young is she? How many boys did she date to be this good and can literally translate boy talk? I couldn't even do that in my age!
b.) The girls are FIFTEEN year olds, right? So, what? Do they just have to go and date one boy to the next? Like from Josh to Zach at that speed?
I said this on my other review that I am not looking at this novel morally or something. I just thought that the presentation of the girl's lovelife aren't really suited for the younger generation. (Just my opinion, okay?)

Why am I giving this two stars instead of one? I still love the ACADEMY.

I'd Tell You I Love You But Then I'd Have To Kill You is overloaded with cuteness!

I was so lucky to stumble upon a boxed set of Gallagher Girls 1-3 on sale last year at my local book store! I have been meaning to grab a copy for so long because I've heard nothing but fantastic things about it. And truly, I enjoyed reading my first Carter book!

Gallagher Academy isn't your typical school. It is an exclusive school with super advanced curriculum made for well, spies. Bex, Liz and Cammie are all training to be future spies however, during their first practice mission to know what beverage their professor is drinking, someone sees and approaches Cammie. Panic runs through her body and she doesn't have any other choice but to lie to protect the academy's secret: she has to lie. But the guy, Josh, keeps her interested and her friends starts to investigate: spy style.

What I liked and enjoyed most in this novel is the mystery behind the Gallagher Academy. It is not everyday I encounter such premise that I kept flipping the pages out of so much excitement for the school and the student's training. I thought I would see more of the action being a spy entailed however, I was presented with a teen's way of sneaking out from such highly secured establishment to be with a guy. I was kind of disappointed also with the way how once-in-a-lifetime-love outweighed a mother's plea to have quality time with her daughter. I just don't think it would be a good idea for teens to honor an unknown kind of a relationship over parents. I am not questioning morals or anything, it's just my opinion. If love is true, it could wait. So why not let someone wait another day?

I liked our young protagonists. Cammie's "invisible" yet very clever character tandems perfectly with Bex's and Liz's. They have the right combination just like in Harry Potter. So Cammie is Harry, Bex is Ron and Liz is Hermione. I liked how kickass these girls are when it comes to spying, speaking 14 different language and studying PhD Chemistry however I wasn't just a fan of the romance part. Period. But I would swoon over Josh any time of the day, any day of the year! He's I think the most normal yet lovable guy I've stumbled upon!

I'd Tell You I Love You But Then I'd Have To Kill You is action-packed and fast-paced novel! It is another novel that showcases how woman can be everything they wanted to be under any circumstances! Plus, we rock!

VERDICT:

"You shouldn't judge someone until you've walk a mile through an underground tunnel in her uncomfortable shoes."

Every Other Day is an out of the body experience!

I was so stoked when I learned that I won two hard bound books of Barnes (other one is Nobody) from a blogger's giveaway. As soon as I received the package, I couldn't help but pet the gorgeous covers! This one is very pretty in person and the synopsis is just intriguing. It is like Daughter of Smoke and Bone meets The Walking Dead in Black City.

Switching every 24 hours to someone or rather something indestructible and hungry for hunting dangerous supernatural creatures, Kali's not your ordinary girl. She turns to a demon hunter. When she's human, she's vulnerable and invisible to people. She doesn't have friends. But when Skylar approaches her at school and claims she's psychic, Kali starts to accept her friendship. Trouble only occurs when she sees Bethany, the school's popular A-list girl, marked with Ouroboros -- she knows she has to save her from foreseen death. And Kali isn't aware that she would survive death's 24-hour mark and be something more than a demon hunter.

Barnes did an amazing job creating such dark and gore novel where one can still see glimpses of light. The prose of the novel was okay for me however, I was annoyed reading "preternatural" over and over and over again. She created broken characters and mingled them in ways I didn't expect could possibly work for a paranormal premise. I wanted to learn more about the paranormal aspect of this book but there were several loop holes. Some things weren't completely explained like how it all started. I mean, there should be more, more from the gist of the story and at least a little more background for the characters. Hellhounds are pretty much scary creatures and I was seriously taken aback when there were zombies involved. Zombies for the win!! The strength of the twists brought so much emotion that I was stumped for a minute! It built up slowly but eventually delivered full blast action as promised. It was an awesome experience!

Broken character 1: Bethany. She's annoying, mean and bully. She's beautiful and wealthy. But at the back of it all, she's just a regular teenager who lacks attention from her parents. Which is one of the sole basis why some teenagers have attitude issues.
Broken character 2: Skylar. OMG. She's the bully victim and most people doesn't believe her when she claims she's psychic. But again, despite of it all, she managed to ignore whatever name people call her and remained kind and sweet. And another OMG. She's the hero here! She actually mae me cry ocean. This pure hearted simple girl just wanted to help a friend and she gave so much. SHe gave so much. *wipes tears*
Broken character 3: Kali. Her mom left. Her dad doesn't even acknowledge her. No friends. She doesn't even know herself or her origins. She's lost and confused. And most tragic of all, she's unlove. Switching from being a vulnerable human to invincible Demon Hunter when you don't even feel pain and you become a predator, I couldn't blame Kali if there were moments she prefer switching. She's definitely a kick-ass heroine and I adored her skills and heart. Even if she turns to someone so strong, she didn't lose her heart. And no matter how nasty people treat her, she exudes compassion and understanding.
Broken character 4: Zev. He is definitely broken. He was held captive for years so he could be studied. But I have so many questions about his character. Where did he come from? How was he able to communicate with Kali? Why does he have two Ouroboros? What happened to him? But most of these weren't answered but am glad Zev was in Kali's head. He helped her shape her motives and I actually ship them.

Every Other Day takes you to a place where mystical creatures exist, where experiments and tests assault the living, where an assassin is full of hunger to hunt and kill. It is dark, bloody yet emotional. It is the abstract of good and evil. Barnes made sure that readers would get addictive and would ask for more.

REVIEW: NOBODY BY JENNIFER LYNN BARNES.

This is the book I won from Gecky Boz several months back together with Every Other Day. I don't know how to say it in a different way but I was again ecstatic to read this. If you have read the synopsis, you would understand how this had me anticipating it. The only problem with me though, I don't relay on ratings specially on Goodreads. I always want to see it myself whether a novel is good or a disaster. And I wished just for once, I took these ratings into consideration.

Claire is almost invisible to everyone since who knows when. No one gives her any attention at all. Its as if no one sees her or sense her or hears her, even her parents. She's so accustomed to it that she learns to imagine things to make herself feel that she matters at least. Until one day, when she senses someone looking at her for the first time, she was appalled because the guy points a gun at her and tries to kill her.

I loved and enjoyed Every Other Day. Barnes' take on protagonists that are always alone/broken/unloved is uniquely delivered but if one would try to read Every Other Day then Nobody (or the other way around), the pattern is too prominent. As I've said, I enjoyed Every Other Day. However, I was seriously tempted to mark Nobody as my first ever DNF. I haven't used this mark at all and I have been trying to finish reading books I started but Nobody tested my patience. I have too many issues with it that after reaching the first hundred and fifty pages, I knew I had to take time and contemplate whether to go on or stop at once. IT WAS WAY TOO SLOW. Slow. Slow. Slow. The turn of events happened after I think three hundred pages. Insta-love was there again (but the story can justify it at least), world-building was weak like I mean WHAT AND WHERE IS FADE, I wasn't sure if I should tag it as paranormal (because of the Sensors) or sci-fi (because of the experiments/drugs) or both, characters were indecisive and always at war with themselves AND the thing with the Nulls and Nobodies were confusing.

Nix claimed he's an assassin. But as I know more things about him, he wasn't able to prove that he's really an assassin. I don't know, I just felt he's emotionally disturbed. He's angsty, confused, used and all these he learned after he met Claire. What was so different with her that he never questioned the Institute's commands before? If he knows he's a Nobody, why didn't he question his existence? Why all of a sudden he had the need to protect Claire just because she never hurt anyone? He has all the resources around him to figure out what he is but he just unquestionable says yes to everything he's presented with. Totally unbelievable. And Claire. Just because someone sees you for the first time and builds you a bookshelf doesn't mean you have to fall in love! Totally makes my eyes roll and twitch. How is it even possible that your parents are normal human beings and their offspring is a Nobody? Like how can a decent parent go into the grocery and forget their daughter that they have to relay on a post it in their car to remember they have a child? UGH!!! I want to choke myself. AND AND let me say that how can a mother even let some big time old school organization experiment with her children? Totally twisted. I appreciated the fact that the power of the premise Barnes (I think) was trying to encapsulate in the novel was potentially adamant but IT. JUST. DIDN'T. WORK. like it was supposed to. It didn't work for me at all.

I have so much to say about this novel but whatever I wrote are the major points that ticked me off.

Nobody would have been a strong sci-fi/paranormal novel. The originality of the plot was too strong but the loop holes are much stronger that it pulled it all down the drain. I tried so much to like it but I could make myself fade and pretend that its an extension of me. I just couldn't.

VERDICT:

"Do you know what I thought when you tried to kill me? The first time? I thought, How can somebody want me dead when no one knows I'm alive?"

REVIEW: OF POSEIDON BY ANNA BANKS.

Of Poseidon is exhilarating!

I am not entirely sure why I haven't picked this up sooner after I heard all the fuss about it! Good thing I was able to borrow an ARC from Precious at Fragments of Life last March during Tahereh Mafi's Book Signing! Imagine how long it took me to read it? That was four months! Tormenting myself wouldn't do justice on how long I deprived myself of something as fantastic as this novel! I swear on Triton's Trident, it was that good!

Emma is clumsy. When he tripped over on Galen at the beach, she was thrilled to look at his violet eyes, like hers, though she was completely embarrassed. A freak accident happened after they've separated and that's when Galen concluded that she's like him, a Syrena. Only he got confused because Emma didn't change appearance and he had to figure out the truth. He would do anything, including squeezing the truth from Emma herself.

Of Poseidon is absolutely no doubt one of the best novels I've read this year! This is absolutely no doubt one of the best Mythology books ever existed! THIS is absolutely no doubt THE best mermaid novel I ever read! How can you not love a novel that basically hits two birds with one stone? The love I have for mythology plus my hunger for the best mermaid novel just BAAM!! collided in one fantastic novel! What have I been doing all this time that I even had the guts to postpone reading this? THIS IS JUST SO GOOD I WANNA RE-READ IT AFTER I FINISHED IT! Banks definitely nailed bringing Poseidon's history to present and baking it to perfection! Like gooey, fluffy, yummy perfection! World building is as simple as I could picture it to be but hello??? TITANIC?? IN PERSON? DANG, THE BEST PART OF IT ALL! It was like reliving how much I loved Titanic when I was still in high school! And I am telling you, a date like that wouldn't even happen in my life time! The unveiling of secrets about Syrenas and how are they all related to Triton and Poseidon was timely educating and how twisted the ending was! If Riordan is the Father of Cliffhangers, is Banks the Mother? Ohmysweetgoodness, can it be more torturous than that? I am actually having issues processing all this awesomeness so please pardon me if I keep on fangirling or screaming or pulling my hair!

First of all, I was devastated about what happened to Chloe. I think at that point, someone could've saved her and a few characters could've saved her. Thinking how the novel claimed that Galen is the fastest Syrena. Second, why is Rayna so annoyingly cute? Lastly, why do they all have gorgeous, mouth watering VOILET eyes again? I just died there! It was hard for me to be a fan of Emma though. Her temper was annoying. And why did it take her that long to save her friend? But the way she wanted to beat up Rayna? That was AMAZING! Galen however, was definitely a one of a kind character. This was my first encounter with a Syrena and I loved how he was described. His persistence in knowing the truth about Emma, his dilemma to choose between saving mankind and the one person he wanted to be with maybe too heavy for his shoulders but he willingly carried it without complaints. Their pseudo-relationship was at first hilarious and a predictable one I should say, but the way it transgressed was unexpected. It was as if the water itself brought them together and I'm wishing more from their romance in Of Triton!

Of Poisedon would drown you with excitement. The questions behind how the truth would be unveiled is a phenomenon I cannot contain! It is dangerous, adventurous and mysterious! How one person can ever love a novel this much? I have no idea but I am in love with this series! The overall impact is a like tsunami that would knock off your breathing!

Oppression is a nice read!

I was lucky to be given a finished copy of this book in exchange for a review. I love Greek Mythology and the cover of Oppression is simply gorgeous that seems to hide mysteries behind it. I wanted to really read it and I would like to thank Jessica Therrien for allowing me to even review it.

Having a genetic disorder where you age five times slower than a normal human has its pros and cons tied to it. It would be as if you are an invincible immortal, you get to be young for hundreds of years and you have so much time ahead of you. But Elyse actually didn't see it that way. She only knows the cons because she experienced them first hand: she lose people she loves while she remain young and she has to move away every few years for people not to notice her not aging. When she moves to San Francisco and lays eyes on a gorgeous young guy, she feels as if she's being sucked near him and couldn't contain her need to see him. Only to be weirded out that he knows her and claims that someone's following her. And finally reveals that there are more like her, a Descendant.

Wow. There goes my expectations. It hurts to see my expectations tumble down so hard. Ladies and gentlemen, we have another case of insta-love. Why does it always have to be like this? Like it only takes a few pages to fall inlove this hard? Why does it only have to take a single sight to be this irrevocably in love with someone? Why does it always have to ruin a very promising novel? Okay. I hate insta-loves. This novel, all in all, could have received a five star rating only to be murdered by such impulse to fall in love that fast. As in, why?? But aside from that, I liked what Therrien created. The love I have for Greek Mythology amplified my strength to hold on to this until I finish it. The plot was actually something I haven't encountered before, except for the romance part, that I was actually thrilled to go through the entire adventure. Being a Riordan fan, the familiarity of Oppression brought lightness inside because I wouldn't have to research anymore and again, I gripped on to the pretty cool presentation I was given. What I like most is the genetic disorder front. Tell me, who wouldn't be stoked to have that disorder? You won't have to wish to be a vampire anymore, right? The novel was also a little slow for me, it took me while to be immersed in it because few things kept on popping in the middle of a major scene and I had to really go back and re-read the previous paragraphs to keep me well-informed.

If you have never been in a relationship ever and you are so used to shutting out people to save yourself for future pain, would you easily let yourself feel something for someone you don't even know? Will you open your world so wide to someone you are not even sure you can trust? Well, Elyse basically nailed this. She was alone almost all her life and never allowed herself to be close to people. She was too afraid to feel pain after she lost her parents. Then seeing William for the first time, she immediately opens up and then falls deeply in love with him. She even went with him the first time they met when he told him they have to go. I don't know people, but I think there's something wrong in there somewhere. She didn't even fight him but trusted him right away. She could have refused at least. And I don't understand why she has to be okay when people doesn't give her answers. I just don't. BUT I'm glad she fought for Anna. Because if she didn't, I would hundred percent hate her. And what about William? He's like a knight in shining armor with a power no one would be able to resist. I don't disagree with that, it just annoyed me why he persisted on keeping things from Elyse and would eventually surprise her and then ruin everything. Why can't he just tell her things straight to her face? Ugh. Only thing I liked though, the warmth they feel when they touch hands, that it only happens seldom. I find it sweet. Kara? Kara? So predictable. And the ending? Untimely and very confusing.

Oppression is a novel with a very nice twist of mythology and paranormal. It is a very dangerous and unfair world yet love and trust prosper in the middle of war to get freedom. I wish there was more to it that this though. I would really want to like it, even love it however, some things just doesn't work instantly for me.

(I am still going to get Uprising.)

The False Prince is remarkably impressive!

When my favorite blogger/friend (I claim her my friend) Liz from Midnight Bloom Reads reviewed this last year, I've added it to my wish list without hesitations. I've always been a fan of high fantasy and it is perfect for my taste. Luckily, during our Pinoy Book Blogger's Christmas Party, I was able to receive a copy as a gift! Again, it took me a while to read this but geez, WHAT TOOK ME SO LONG? REALLY?

Sage is an orphan who steals and lies just to survive. While on his way back to the orphanage with a stolen roast, Conner, a noble, bought him along with three other orphans. They are bought to go sword and ride training and study history and royalty manners. At the end of their two week training, one would be chosen to pretend and claim Carthya's throne as Prince Jaron. Conner's cunning plan isn't what Sage wanted to submit to but the time has come for him to go back.

While I was reading The False Prince, I was on the verge of losing hope that something even worthy of blurb would happen. The story line built up a little slow and I was really starting to doubt it. I thought at this pace, it might not live to the hype it received. There were also some predictable parts that gave me the idea how and where the twist would turn. You know, it is always painful to be proven wrong. The last hundred pages unravel so many things at once that I heard myself screaming, "I KNEW EET! I DEFINITELY KNEW EET!". The twist alone would rip your brain apart! I LOVED EVERY SINGLE PART OF IT. That doesn't even include the world building which I expected will be phenomenal, the gorgeous Carthya and the towns that surround it, the PIRATES!!! and so much more! I feel like it was trying to squeeze my lungs out of air because I was hyperventilating the whole time!

Sage. Oh, Sage! Your sarcasm was hilarious!! I couldn't put to words how much I loved this character's difficult attitude! It may sound ironic because no one should be really agreeing to any attitude issues but his? Irresistible. His ways of dealing with dishonesty and cruelty were compelling. His strong, brave and a pain in the butt! He knows how to handle himself given the load of responsibility he has to face. How he was at war with himself whether to accept the plan or take the course to a different direction showed how vulnerable he could be but he still stood on his ground and grabbed the chance to do the right thing. He might  be young but this didn't make him turn his back and be selfish. I loved him and he would definitely be a good prince. His affection for Imogen though wasn't something I ship. Conner deserved whatever he was sentenced to. He might have had good intentions but he's still evil. Oh, and I adore Mott!

The first novel in The Ascendance Trilogy, The False Prince sure did rip my brain apart! The love I have for it cannot be put into words! It had taken me by surprise and I actually didn't realize I was holding my breathe while devouring this fantastic and amazing novel! It is edgy, brilliant, magnificent novel that perfectly mixed fantasy and adventure! I can read this over and over and I am definitely okay by it ripping my brain over and over, too! THIS IS JUST TOO PERFECT!

I have been talking to her on Twitter for quite some time and I could say she's one of the sweetest and kindest author I've ever talked to. Aside from that, her books are very very SWOON WORTHY! What made you write?

~ I have always loved to write and tell stories. I'm one of those people who's always imagining something - to the point that I'm often oblivious of what's going on around me (which isn't good).  When I get a story stuck in my head and it won't go away, I HAVE to write it down in order to move on!  It's a blessing and a curse. :)

The frequently asked Q: what inspired you to write Sweet Trilogy?

~ Life. My life and the lives I see around me. Love. Heartbreak. Good and evil in everyday life. How we deal with our struggles. My desire to write the "perfect boy" with every trait that I find sexy. My spirituality. Just...everything in my life led to writing these books.

~ I admit, Anna gets a few traits from me.  I tend to be very sensitive and compassionate. Emotional. The kind of girl I'd like my daughter to read about some day.

 That painful ending in Sweet Evil, were you emotionally invested in it? (That was soooo painful *sniff, sniff*)

~ Well, you see, it's not as painful when you know the final outcome, which I did all along.  But I felt each emotional bit of their journey through each book.  I felt all of what my readers feel.

In Sweet Peril, they traveled to get/convince other characters to be allies. Have you visited those countries yet?

~ No! I have never traveled and I'm DYING to!!!  I had to do a ton of online research to try and get all of the cultural facts correct.

If Kaidan will take you somewhere on a date, where would you want to go?

~ Well, this is awkward since I'm older and married, so let's pretend this question is for the teen me.  See, when I was a teen I was very naive and stupid when it came to boys. I was the girl who would've wanted Kaidan to take me ANYWHERE on a date and I'd be hoping all along he would fall in love with me.  *sigh*  Silly girl.

How do you manage your family time, writing and other things you love doing?

~ I live in a constant state of craziness, with house chores half finished and my mind going in a million different directions. I try to write while the kids are in school, but my son is only in preschool, which is 9 hours a week.  I don't get much time to myself during the days, so I do a good bit of writing at night. I try to put my family first. To push my story thoughts aside and give them my full attention, but it's not always easy. This active imagination is often an impediment! Makes me ditzy!  ;-P

How do you handle negative reviews?

~ I don't read reviews.  I did in the early days, and after spending a day depressed, curled up in the fetal position I realized that not everyone was going to "get" my book or love my book or even like it.  So I decided I was only going to focus on the people who do get it and like it.  The fans.  They make it all worthwhile.

Message to aspiring writers and to your Filipino fans.

~ To aspiring writers, write what's on your heart and don't worry about what anyone thinks. Also, don't expect perfection from your first draft. It's supposed to be ugly.  Revision is where the good stuff happens.
~ To my Filipino fans, you guys rock!!!  I would love to travel to the Philippines some day!  *crosses fingers*
